Gaia Mural Unveiling Party

An unveiling party was held November 7th to celebrate the completion of the new mural at 3011 Greenmount Avenue. The mural, a masterpiece created by street artist Gaia, was produced in conjunction with Waverly Main Street and Greenmount Partners. Funding for the mural was  provided, in part, by the Central Baltimore Partnership’s Spruce Up Grant Program, a program which itself is funded through a grant from DHCD.

To produce the work of art, Gaia, Greenmount Partners, and Waverly Main Street worked in partnership for over a year from concept, to funding, to design and execution. The mural itself spans all three sides of the building at 3011 Greenmount Avenue, wrapping from the front of the building located on Greenmount Avenue to the rear of the building, located on Old York Road. An impressive feat, it adds an unavoidable and positive burst of color (coupled with history) immediately as visitors enter Waverly from the southern end of Greenmount Avenue.

To help celebrate, musicians Brandon Woody and Devron Dennis performed for an hour. As a reflection of the collaborative content that inspired the painting, photographer Schaun Champion documented the event. Champion was responsible for sourcing and shooting the original models used in the mural. Sarah Ruberto of Pomona Floral, who originally adorned the models featured in the mural with flower crowns, was also on hand. She decorated the musicians with flower crowns for the performance, in addition to creating a sculptural arrangement for the light poles lining Greenmount in front of the mural.

The event, which was attended by State Delegate Regina Boyce, Councilwoman Odette Ramos, local news crews, and roughly 50-100 people over the hour-long celebration, was a wonderful conclusion to a yearlong project.

Waverly Main Street thanks all those involved. We are deeply grateful to Central Baltimore Partnership and DHCD for the seed funding and support; Greenmount Partners for their vision and willingness to both fund the project and provide space for installation; and of course, to Gaia himself, for seamlessly creating such a stunning and representative work of art that will adorn the walls of Waverly for years to come.
